Facebook Like vs. Facebook Share

I am working on a redesign for a company website. They wanted their new look to include social media buttons to make their website more ‘social’ and hopefully ‘viral’.

As I’m working on the new look I started to wonder whether I should use the Facebook like feature or the Facebook share feature. This is how the different buttons look like:

Facebook Share:

Facebook Like:

(Note: the buttons can be customized somewhat, I only post them here for reference)

Which do you prefer?

What kind of a Facebook button do you think a company should use?

I would need to see the full design to be able to decide on which fits better for this particular website.

But are you only considering aesthetics or also function? Because I’m pretty sure the site has a lot more chance of becoming “viral” if you have a Like button. People are much more inclined to just press Like and forget about it. Some people feel it’s more of a “commitment” to share (and add a comment/description).

I press Like if something is agreeable, I press Share if it’s something that i want to share. I think in most cases, i’d be likelier to press Like. The threshold is somehow lower.
